A fairy is a legendary being, usually described as anthropomorphic and feminine, of great beauty, capable of giving gifts to newborns, flying in the air, casting spells and influencing the future. The idea that Man is made of fairies varies according to cultures and countries: ghosts, fallen angels, elementary or even human, tiny or immense, all are closely related to the forces of nature and the concept of a parallel world. The Befana, the White Lady, the sirens, the nymphs, Morgane, Viviane and a great variety of beings and creatures generally feminine can be considered as "fairies". The Anglo-Saxons use the name "fairies" to refer to fairies, but also all the little anthropomorphic creatures of pagan folklore such as goblins, dwarves and elves.
Derived from popular beliefs and ancient mythologies, folklore inspired literature and Celtic tales as well as ancient deities, the fairies are a creation of the medieval West. They play a variety of roles. While some help, heal, guide people or provide them with enchanted weapons, other fairies are better known for their "tricks", their habit of dancing in circles, and of abducting people, especially human newborns. they replace with a changeling. Endowed with magical faculties, they disguise themselves and modify the appearance of their surroundings.
